NEWSLETTER – JULY 2020

Grocane has pleasure in announcing that following months of negotiations we have managed to source new re-insurance for our Spread of Fire cover. This is now fixed at R50 million for ALL crops including timber. Those Members who border on timber farms can now “sleep easy”.

Due to Covid 19, Grocane’s Board decided to donate our small “Public relations” budget to three deserving charities within the Sugar Industry. Donations were made to Tongaat Hulett”s” Felixton community program, Sezela Cane Growers scheme as well as UCL’s ARK feeding scheme.

Grocane wishes to remind Members that following a resolution passed at the AGM in July 2016, that if you have a FPA in your area, you are obliged to join it. We have allowed a period of time for Members to implement this. At a Board meeting in June 2020 the Directors decided that if a Member has a claim, and is not a member of an FPA, he can face penalties of up to 50% of the claim.

As we write this newsletter we are inundated with fire reports and we therefore ask that Members are vigilant and avoid burning in dangerous conditions. Kindly take heed of your Fire Protection Officer’s messages.

Grocane has noticed an unfortunate trend whereby Members are no longer residing on their farms, and these farms are often left unattended. Should you be an absentee landlord, kindly ensure that you always leave a responsible person, with a firefighting team, to deal with emergencies.

We wish you a fruitful “ rest of the season,” and wait for the rain.

TORNADO HITS MPOLWENI AND NEW HANOVER
On 13th November 2019 a devasting wind destroyed houses, crops and properties in the Mpolweni/New Hanover district. One of the affected farmers was a member of Grocane’s short term insurance scheme, which is brokered by Marsh Insurers and underwritten by Old Mutual Insurance.

The Grocane member received compensation for their losses as well as a generous “trauma” pack. When it was discovered that seven of the farm’s employees had lost their houses, the insurers sprang into action and provided all the employees with very generous food parcels.

These parcels were handed over to the recipients at a small ceremony on the Members farm. Present were representatives from Old Mutual, Marsh Insurance (Mr Kurt Wright) as well as Grocane.
(Director – Mr Heinrich Eggers and Field Manager Mr Ian Stewart)

It is hoped that this gesture went some way in enhancing their Christmas break.
