Dear Members,

We have navigated what has undoubtedly been a challenging year remarkably well so far. The decline in the RV price, together with the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Tongaat Hulett situation, current strike action, and continued arson fires, has been felt by everyone connected to the sugar industry.

The uncertainty surrounding Tongaat Hulett has also resulted in many members moving their cane supply to alternative mills, which may involve changes to grower codes or mill numbers. If you have changed your mill or grower code, please contact the Grocane office to ensure that our records are updated.

All members are strongly urged to:

• Regularly inspect all firefighting equipment and refurbish or replace equipment where necessary.
• Clear and maintain all firebreaks, particularly where vegetation is encroaching.
• Widen firebreaks in high-pressure or high-risk areas.
• Consider undertaking formal firefighting training through your SASRI Extension Officer or local Fire Protection Officer. Courses are available.
• Remain constantly vigilant throughout the remainder of the season.
• Begin planning your carry-over fields and identifying where these will be located on your farm.

Grocane will continue to explore and implement all appropriate risk-management measures to mitigate our exposure to these challenges and ensure the long-term sustainability of our Co-op.

Please remember that membership of your regional Fire Protection Association is mandatory, and all members are required to remain compliant with the National Veld and Forest Fire Act.
