About Us
Motivation came from the fact that sugar cane, at that time was harvested on a two-yearly basis, and during the “off crop”, when mills were closed, the whole of the following season’s cane was at risk from fire, and a grower could be ruined. Commercial Insurance was available but at a price beyond the reach of most growers.
They formed the Co-Operative of Grocane (Now registered as: GROCANE AGRICULTURAL FIRE INSURANCE PRIMARY CO-OP LTD)
The Grocane members are +/- 1000 members that are spread throughout the sugar industry.
The industry stretches from Port Edward in the South, to Malelane in the North, and inland to Hilton and Harding.
There are 12 sugar mills, and the Total South African crop is in the region of 15-20 million tons sugar cane, spanning 371 500 hectares, producing approximately 1.8 – 2.5 million tons of sugar.
If a member’s cane is damaged by an accidental fire, that member may be entitled to compensation in terms of Grocane’s constitution and its rules.
The period of insurance is from 1 April to 31 March. Premiums are currently paid in arrears and deducted from the member’s final cane payment.
Membership also entitles members to public liability (spread of fire) and SASRIA cover through Grocane group policies.
Grocane is not a financial services provider.
